We have been teaching rescue classes on every major river in Montana since 1995. While we are based near Missoula, Montana we teach classes on the Swan, Middle Fork of Flathead, Missouri, Clearwater, Gallatin, Yellowstone, Stillwater, Bitterroot, Bighole, Beaverhead, and Madison Rivers. Through the Whitewater Rescue Institute we teach classes throughout the west and as far south as Costa Rica.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

WHITE WATER RESCUE TECHNICIAN is an intensive 24 hour class with a half day of classroom instruction followed by two and a half days developing and practicing skills on the river. While the initial emphasis is safety & self rescue, the class offers an in-depth look at reading water, recognizing and avoiding hazards, quick rescue techniques, riverboarding, boat-based rescues, dealing with boat wraps and entrapments, technical rescue systems, and a variety of practical scenarios. We analyze footage of actual river rescues in the classroom and progress from a solid foundation of rescue skills and practice into rescue scenarios on the river.  The Swiftwater Rescue Technician class is challenging, fun and tailored to the students needs. A manual, test, patch, I.D. card, and certification are included.  The WRT is compliant to NFPA  standards 1670  is certified through the Whitewater Rescue Institute. Tuition: $335

WHITE WATER FIRST RESPONDER: A one and a half day course designed for raft guides and private boaters, this is a 16 hour class with a half day of classroom instruction followed by one day developing and practicing skills on the river. While the initial emphasis is safety & self rescue, the class offers an in-depth look at reading water, recognizing and avoiding hazards, quick rescue techniques, boat-based rescues, dealing with boat wraps and entrapments, technical rescue systems, and a variety of practical scenarios. We analyze footage of actual river rescues in the classroom and progress from a solid foundation of rescue skills and practice into rescue scenarios on the river. The class is challenging, fun and tailored to the students needs. A manual, test, patch, I.D. card, and certification are included. Cost:  $195 

WILDERNESS FIRST AID AND RIVER RESCUE
Instructors from Aerie Backcountry Medicine and Montana River Guides are offering unique two to three day classes that combine Wilderness First Aid and Swiftwater Rescue instruction. We integrate these two dynamic disciplines into a class that is information-packed, fast-paced, challenging and fun. We progress from a solid foundation of first aid and river rescue fundamentals into hands-on skills practice that culminates in a variety of rescue and medical scenarios on the river.

 RIVER RESCUE -SKILLS REFRESHER

This one-day course is designed for the Swiftwater Rescuer in need of a tune-up.  Whether you are a professional fire fighter, or recreational boater, you probably need to practice your skills.  We tailor this course to your needs and your river.  We can provide you with challenging scenarios that will leave you with a renewed confidence in your skills. Cost: $120

Equipment: You will need a full wetsuit or drysuit; a pair of neoprene booties and gloves, a helmet (w/skullcap or beanie/hat); and a lifejacket. Personal equipment rentals are available from Montana River Guides for $25 the first day of class. Bring lunch, water and extra dry, warm top & bottom layers such as fleece and polypropelene.

 

Registration: Register by calling or emailing to confirm space in the class. We require a 50% deposit to hold your spot. Just give us a credit card number or send the deposit and your contact information to: Montana River Guides, 2439 Gilbert Ave, Missoula, MT 59802. Agency billing can be arranged over the phone. If the course is cancelled or you cancel more than three weeks prior to the class a full refund will be made.  Otherwise you forfeit your deposit.
