Montana Riverboarding Trips

Riverboarding Montana is a bucket list adventure. A guided riverboarding trip through the Alberton Gorge near Missoula, offers big whitewater excitement and amazing surfing in an ancient river canyon. Montana River Guides has been guiding riverboard trips on the Alberton Gorge for over twenty years. If you’re ready for the ultimate whitewater thrill, this is it! Many of you have already seen us running rapids on river boards. Now you can join the fun. With some simple instruction, a good guide and the right equipment you’ll be ready to get acquainted with whitewater on an entirely new, adrenaline-filled level.

“You can’t get any closer to the whitewater – you’re right in it; that’s what makes it so much fun.”

Riverboarding Montana Since 1994

We are the only outfitter in Montana offering guided riverboard trips— considered by many to be the ultimate whitewater thrill. If you’ve rafted and wanted more excitement, adventure, and challenge–then riverboarding is the adventure for you! Learn to maneuver through rapids and ferry across the current. The Alberton Gorge has some incredible surf waves throughout the summer. Stopping and catching waves is a highlight of every trip.  While the rapids and the exhilaration are amazing, we think the most powerful aspect of a river board trip arrive between the rapids. Enjoying the thrill of having just run a huge rapid and anticipating the next one. Taking a break on some sun-warmed rocks along the river. This truly is Montana’s best summer adventure and is North America’s #1 Destination for Riverboarding!

We had such a blast! We went riverboarding first thing in the morning, and had the gorge almost all to ourselves. Riverboarding is such a cool and intimate way to experience the river – so peaceful and scenic in the calm sections, and challenging and exhilarating in the rapids. Our guide, Mike, was awesome. Not only did we feel completely safe under his guidance, but he also immediately felt like a friend we’d known for years. It was an all around amazing experience, and even with all the things we’ve done after six months of traveling out west, this was most certainly a highlight. An adventure we will never forget!

Whitewater Riverboard Trips with Montana River Guides

The section of the Alberton Gorge we descend contains rollicking Class III rapids, characterized by obvious entry points with large waves caused by a combination of constriction and deep channel drops. With its large recovery pools and spectacular canyon scenery, the Gorge is the perfect setting to introduce people to this unique form of river running.

While riverboarding may appear to be pretty extreme to some recreational boaters, a riverboarder properly instructed and equipped with a wetsuit, lifejacket, helmet, and fins is well-prepared for moderate whitewater. It's sort of like sledding; your center of gravity is low and you're very stable. Strong swimmers looking for whitewater thrills can learn to riverboard after a short orientation and practice session. Anyone in good shape and ready for adventure will learn quickly with proper instruction, equipment, and guidance. Following a guide, you'll learn to read the river, point the board in the direction you want to go, and maneuver in the current by using arms and fins as paddles and rudders. There's no better way to understand river currents and features and learn how to read moving water; soon you'll feel like part of the river instead of struggling against it.

"It's a six-dimensional river experience - Riverboarding is the wildest and most intimate river adventure out there"

Once students learn the fundamentals of maneuvering they're ready to start surfing waves and holes just like kayaks or whitewater canoes. This is the ultimate whitewater thrill, great for friends, families and company teambuilding. Prices range from $85 to $129 for day trips. For more information on riverboard or whitewater tours in Montana, call Montana River Guides at 406-214-0245, or 406-722-7238.

We have taken many rafting trips over the years and hands down this was one of the best ones yet!!! We took a private full day rafting tour with river side picnic and couldn’t have had a better time!! Our guide set up the best lunch spread at the waterside including fresh fruit and veggie trays, salad, sandwiches, chips/salsa, and the best homemade cookies!!! We had many stops, chances to swim, small cliff jumping, and the most beautiful scenery!!! Shout out to Amy as being the most fun guide to our crazy “Billy Goat Cyrus” group from Texas!!! Request her and you won’t be disappointed!!!

Our Montana River Guide trip down the Clark Fork was the highlight to our Montana vacation. Our guide let us paddle some while we were going thru the rapids which was an awesome experience. Weather and sun on the morning trip made for some great pictures.

We did a scenic float with our young kids. This was the absolute best thing we did our whole trip! So beautiful, so much fun. Amy was our guide and she was incredibly fun, knowledgable and kind. Cannot wait to float with them again!

There were three of us over 60 year old gals on our trip. Our guide, Jack, was outstanding. We felt safe and secure under his care the whole time while having the time of our lives. The beautiful scenery and wildlife were a bonus to the incredible river with its rapids along with calm areas to relax & enjoy the ride. Top on my list of the other incredible things we did this summer.

One of the best experience in the US was spending our Sunday with Montana River Guides! The crew was able to accommodate to over 60 of us on the YSEALI alumni tour and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our time on the river - Whitewater Rafting or Scenic Tour. Guides are 100% professionals who have fun with safety in mind. Highly recommend and must visit when you're in Montana. Thanks for the memories!
