River rescue & Raft Guide Training Scenario

Whitewater Rafting and Rescue Clinics Offered

Novice river runners or paddlers who want to learn how to safely lead whitewater raft trips can choose from one of several upcoming classes.  Montana River Guides is offering a variety of two day rafting clinics, three day swiftwater rescue classes and  five day Whitewater Raft Guide Schools in April, May and June on the Blackfoot and Clark Fork Rivers.

The two day workshops are an introduction to rafting skills that teach students proper equipment, boat rigging, river safety, reading water, and rowing skills in Class II and III whitewater.

“We focus on how to read the river and guide rafts in whitewater “ said Sam Johnston, Lead Instructor at Montana River Guides. “We give students as much information as we can in the classroom  session  and then two long long days on the river, giving them hands-on experience. “ Johnston said the Blackfoot River is ideal for introducing people to guiding because there are so many features in the river and plenty of places to practice simple maneuvers such as eddy turns, peel outs, and ferrying.

The three day Swiftwater Rescue Classes are designed for recreational boaters and rescue professionals who want to learn how to self rescue and help others in a river emergency. These classes include self-rescue practice and rescue scenarios where students will practice skills such as throw bags, rescue swimming, entrapment situations and boat flips.

Designed for novice river guides or people who want to lead family and friends on raft trips, the five day Raft Guide Schools combine Swiftwater Rescue and raft guide training and are  After working on the Blackfoot the class will move on to the bigger whitewater of Alberton Gorge where they will get the opportunity to practice in-flow rescues, boat flipping, and running more challenging rapids.

“The students love the last two days because they’re challenged by the  Gorge’s bigger  rapids and features”, says Johnston.  “They’ll have to apply everything that they’ve learned to scout rapids, select their route, and then run the rapid safely with their teams.”

No experience is necessary.  Montana River Guides has been teaching river classes since 1995. Swiftwater Rescue certification is provided from the Whitewater Rescue Institute. For more information or to register go to www.montanariverguides.com or call Montana River Guides at 406-214-0245.

We have taken many rafting trips over the years and hands down this was one of the best ones yet!!! We took a private full day rafting tour with river side picnic and couldn’t have had a better time!! Our guide set up the best lunch spread at the waterside including fresh fruit and veggie trays, salad, sandwiches, chips/salsa, and the best homemade cookies!!! We had many stops, chances to swim, small cliff jumping, and the most beautiful scenery!!! Shout out to Amy as being the most fun guide to our crazy “Billy Goat Cyrus” group from Texas!!! Request her and you won’t be disappointed!!!

Our Montana River Guide trip down the Clark Fork was the highlight to our Montana vacation. Our guide let us paddle some while we were going thru the rapids which was an awesome experience. Weather and sun on the morning trip made for some great pictures.

We did a scenic float with our young kids. This was the absolute best thing we did our whole trip! So beautiful, so much fun. Amy was our guide and she was incredibly fun, knowledgable and kind. Cannot wait to float with them again!

There were three of us over 60 year old gals on our trip. Our guide, Jack, was outstanding. We felt safe and secure under his care the whole time while having the time of our lives. The beautiful scenery and wildlife were a bonus to the incredible river with its rapids along with calm areas to relax & enjoy the ride. Top on my list of the other incredible things we did this summer.

One of the best experience in the US was spending our Sunday with Montana River Guides! The crew was able to accommodate to over 60 of us on the YSEALI alumni tour and all of us thoroughly enjoyed our time on the river - Whitewater Rafting or Scenic Tour. Guides are 100% professionals who have fun with safety in mind. Highly recommend and must visit when you're in Montana. Thanks for the memories!
